In 1993, a group of international artists gathered in the heart of the desert outside Broken Hill to participate in a sculpture symposium. Using enormous sandstone blocks that were transported from the Wilcannia region, they crafted 12 unique and stunning sculptures.
Just six weeks later, the artists unveiled their masterpieces, which have become one of the most photographed sites in the Australian outback.
Visitors can find these awe-inspiring sculptures on Sundown Hill, located in the Living Desert Reserve, a short 15-minute drive north of the city. This location provides breathtaking views of the outback landscape, and can be accessed by either road or a 900-meter walking trail from the Living Desert Picnic Area. The sculptures’ moods change throughout the day, so they are worth experiencing at all times, but it is hard to beat the beauty of the sunset view.
