Miner’s Memorial

Miner’s Memorial

The dramatic Line of Lode Miner’s Memorial stands as a poignant monument to the more than 800 lives claimed by mining in the region. The Line of Lode, containing silver, lead and zinc, is one of the world’s largest ore bodies, and the memorial overlooks the remote outback city.

The memorial’s architecturally striking design, opened in 2001, features freestanding glass panels etched with the name of each miner who lost their life, encased within high rust-red steel walls. Visitors passing through the monument are reminded of the human tragedy that remains a significant part of the city’s mining history.

Located on the summit of a gigantic hill or mullock, which is essentially a 30m-high pile of mining waste material, the memorial provides spectacular views of the surrounding area. The views, especially at sunset, are truly awe-inspiring.
