Riddiford Arboretum

Riddiford Arboretum

The Riddiford Arboretum is a beautiful green space located just across from the Centro shopping centre, featuring a variety of trees and shrubs native to the region. The arboretum was established in 1988 on the site of a former repair and oil transfer depot for the Silverton Tramway.

Named in honor of Walter Riddiford, who served as mayor of Broken Hill from 1949 to 1962, the arboretum is also a tribute to Albert Morris, a self-taught botanist who played a crucial role in the establishment of regeneration reserves around the city. These reserves not only help to anchor the local dust but also significantly reduce the effects of dust storms that previously ravaged the area, turning day into night.

Visitors to the Riddiford Arboretum can take a peaceful stroll through the beautiful trees and shrubs, enjoying the natural beauty of the region while reflecting on the important role that this arboretum and its namesakes have played in the conservation and preservation of the local environment.
