Silver City Mint & Art Centre

Silver City Mint & Art Centre

The Silver City Mint & Art Centre in Broken Hill is a unique combination of an art gallery, a silversmith workshop, and a chocolate factory, making it a one-of-a-kind destination. The highlight of the centre is The Big Picture, an impressive work of art created by a local artist named Peter Anderson. This painting is a massive 100 meters long and up to 12 meters high, featuring 100,000 saltbushes, 20,000 trees, 20,000 small stones, 1,000 large stones, 3,000 clouds, 1,500 hills, and 12 sculptures. It’s believed to be the world’s largest acrylic painting on canvas by a single artist.

Since opening to the public in 2001, The Big Picture has become Broken Hill’s premier tourist attraction, captivating visitors with the sensation of ‘walking into a painting’ while experiencing the beauty of the Outback. Anderson’s unique style, dubbed ‘ando realism,’ has earned him a renowned reputation. His paintings are not only visually stunning but also convey a sense of depth and realism that transports the viewer into the landscape.

If you feel peckish, you can visit the Chocolate Factory for some delicious fudge and truffles. Afterward, browse through the jewellery section, where elegant silver jewellery made in Broken Hill is displayed. You might even witness the silversmith at work, creating their next masterpiece.
