Silverton Gaol Museum

Silverton Gaol Museum

The Silverton Gaol Museum houses an extensive collection of artifacts that range from Bibles dating back to 1862 to war memorabilia. Visitors can explore the gaol’s original medical room, now converted into a fascinating museum showcasing tools of the health profession and emitting an authentic hospital smell. Additionally, the museum features a unique exhibit – the coroner’s bath – where bodies were preserved while awaiting the arrival of the Sydney coroner, which could take up to three months.

A variety of antique objects, including early-era scales, kitchen equipment, lamps, and gramophones, are also on display. The museum also chronicles institutions such as the Salvation Army, Fire Brigade, schools, scouts, girl guides, and the Broken Hill Orchestra. The mining heritage exhibit is extensive, and visitors can find a broad explanation of the area’s flora and fauna within the museum. Aboriginal artefacts, drawings, and implements such as grinding stones and axe heads are also on display, as well as historical pastoral equipment.

The Silverton Gaol Museum is filled with curiosities and local history and is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the area.
