Umberumberka Reservoir

Umberumberka Reservoir

The Umberumberka Reservoir, located just outside of Silverton, was a major project that began in 1911 and was completed in 1915. The project employed up to 500 workers at any given time and a small settlement was established near the dam during the construction phase. Workers transported 50,000 concrete drums weighing 400 pounds each by train to Silverton and then by horse and cart to the construction site. To move men and equipment across the ravine during construction, a flying fox was created.

The dam is spread across an area of 145 hectares and has a catchment of 407km2 with a capacity of nearly 7 mega litres. The dam is surrounded by River Red Gum and Acacia shrublands with Umberumberka Creek and Star Creek feeding into it. The Umberumberka Reservoir was critical to the water supply for Broken Hill and Silverton communities until the Wentworth to Broken Hill pipeline was commissioned in 2018.

Visitors to the reservoir can enjoy a peaceful picnic and BBQ experience while taking in the stunning surroundings of the water and the wildlife. The area provides an opportunity to relax and unwind while experiencing the breathtaking scenery of the region.
