Petah Devine: A Dr Doolittle of the Far West
If the Far West has its own Dr Doolittle, Petah Devine from the Silverton Outback Camels is a worthy candidate for that title. A former policewoman, Petah now runs an assortment of animals large and small, creating this incredible tourist attraction. Petah’s journey to the Outback was a transformative one, leaving behind her police career due to PTSD and discovering solace and purpose amidst her growing menagerie.
Starting with just two camels as pets, Petah unintentionally revived the tradition of camel rides in Silverton, which had long been cherished by tourists. Her intimate connection with the camels and other animals on the farm is heartwarming, as camels, goats, emus, deers, and even ostriches interact freely, creating an enchanting sight.
