If you’re looking for a unique and quirky experience, the old Stephen’s Creek Hotel and Owl Barn is a must-see for those who appreciate a little bit of history and a lot of character.
Just outside of Broken Hill, on the road to Tibooburra, you’ll come across it’s burnt-out ruins. It’s rusted iron and crumbling brick walls providing a backdrop for the surrounding desert landscape.
One of the most intriguing and interesting parts of this site is the former “Owl Barn”, and on approach you’ll be greeted by a giant owl with ceramic chicks underneath it.
Founded by Mitch and Val Wilmont in the 1990’s, the Stephens Creek Art Gallery and Owl Barn housed an extensive selection of owl ornaments and artworks collected by the Wilmont’s.
Prior to housing over 4000 owls the Hotel was a popular watering hole amongst travelers and Broken Hill locals looking for something a little different.
While the Owl Barn may not be home to any hoot-hooting feathered friends anymore, the picturesque area is home to a variety of other wildlife, including kangaroos, emus, and lizards.
Just be careful where you step. These ruins are private property so look but do not touch, and be mindful this picturesque area is also home to one of the most venomous snakes in the world, the Eastern Brown. So throw on some sturdy footwear and tread carefully before you venture too far.
